Body weight includes muscle, fat, bone and water. That is why two people of the same weight can have very different needs, and a change on the scales can mean different things. During consultations, multifrequency bioimpedance with the Tanita MC-780 helps provide a fuller picture.

Measure to make decisions: understanding what changes helps you adjust diet and training with better information.
How does it work and why is it so useful?
Bioimpedance uses a very low-intensity current to assess how it passes through tissues. The device combines this response with data such as height, weight and age to estimate body components. The amount and distribution of water affect the result.
- Fat mass: reserve energy.
- Muscle mass: Metabolically active tissue.
- Body water (intra and extracellular).
- Bone mass (estimated).
Two people with the same weight and height may have very different body compositions and therefore different needs and risks.
Key parameters we measure in consultation
The analysis with MC-780 provides multiple variables. The most useful for monitoring progress and making decisions are:
To understand better
Read the report for questions
Body fat
How does adiposity evolve within the agreed objective?
Muscle mass
Does the trend accompany strength and training?
Body water
Are there changes that help interpret a rapid weight variation?
Estimated visceral fat
How does this indicator fit with waist and metabolic health?
A tool for monitoring, not an exam
An initial measurement helps to set a reference. In the reviews, we compare trends along with waist, diet, strength and sensations. Thus it is easier to adjust a plan that seeks to lose fat or gain muscle.
For example, if both weight and performance fall, review energy intake, protein and training. If weight barely changes but strength improves and waist size decreases, progress is happening that the scales alone would not show.
An isolated number can hide the context
Results can vary after a demanding exercise session, a large meal or a change in hydration. Glycogen is stored with water, and replenishing it also affects results. A rapid drop in estimated “muscle mass” therefore does not mean actual muscle tissue has been lost overnight.
Comparing under similar conditions makes follow-up more useful. Follow the team's preparation instructions and report changes in training, medication or health. If you have an implanted electronic device, mention it before the measurement.

What the other sections mean
| Section | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| Estimated basal metabolic rate | An estimate of resting energy expenditure. Activity is added for planning, and the estimate is checked against progress. |
| Metabolic age | A comparison calculated by the device; progress is better assessed through physical ability and specific measurements. |
| Estimated bone mass | Not equal to bone mineral density. The health of the bone is studied with the tests indicated where appropriate. |
| Segment analysis | It helps to observe estimates of arms, legs and trunk along with physical valuation. |
Strength completes information
Muscle matters because of what it enables you to do. Standing from a chair, climbing stairs, carrying bags and progressing in an exercise provide information that a percentage cannot show. Body composition and function complement each other.
In a weight loss, retaining capacity is a priority. In sport, you may want to gain muscle or hold it while changing the load. In both cases, measuring makes sense when it helps answer a question and decides the next step.
How to prepare a useful review
Think about the past few weeks: appetite, schedule, training, sleep and any difficulties. You do not need a perfect record. A couple of specific examples often explain why a plan is working or where it is getting stuck.
The report is not a grade for your behaviour. It is a tool to understand the process, recognise progress and adapt the plan. Leave the review knowing what to continue and what to try next.
